He is our source of life

From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. 'For in him we live and move and have our being.' As some of your own poets have said, 'We are his offspring.' Acts 17:26-28 (NIV)

In general, January ranks among my favourite months of the year. This is largely because, in contrast to the fast-paced culture I have grown accustomed to, life is peaceful at this time. I find it intriguing that this month tends to bring out the gentler, more loving side of individuals.

In my home country of Nigeria, where I live and study, churches frequently observe fasting and prayer sessions. It is thought that starting the year on a spiritual note is appropriate, leading to a greater focus on our spiritual well-being. I find this very empowering as it gives people the opportunity to take things easy, think back on their lives, and develop meaningful plans for the new year. Even if it is become customary, it also creates an opportunity for people to base their actions, decisions, and thoughts on Jesus.

As we begin this new year, we can make good use of this period to design the year ahead in general, but most importantly, to make plans that have the central focus on Jesus. As discussed in last week´s devotion, we can continue to challenge ourselves by answering the questions posed to us.

  1. How many of the goals is it really important to achieve before Jesus comes back? What input do you think Jesus would give to your goals?

  2. How many of your goals relate to God and His kingdom? The Bible says that we must seek God's kingdom first, then he will give us everything else in addition (Matthew 6:33).

  3. How many of your goals are about sharing the life you have in Jesus with others? Jesus asked us to bring the good news of God's kingdom and his salvation to all people groups (Matthew 28,18-20). How is this implemented in our goals and plans for 2024?

Let us continue to seek God, not only in January but all our time on earth and beyond, he is not far from each one of us.

Pray

Dear God, thank you for your amazing presence in my life, for in you I live, and move and have my being. Amen.
