Communicating with Purpose: Reflecting Christ at Work
Devotional week 42
"Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone." - Colossians 4:6 (NIV-UK)
Christ is called the “Word” because He is the living Word of God, through whom the Father reveals Himself, creates, and communicates with us. In John 1, the Greek term Logos shows that Jesus is the perfect revelation of God’s character and will, the agent of creation, and the purpose that gives meaning to life. When He became flesh, the Word made God’s love visible and accessible, showing that in Christ, God speaks to us personally and transformatively.
If Christ is the Word who reveals love and truth, then communication goes far beyond simply exchanging information: it is also about reflecting, in our own way, God’s character. In daily life, communication is highly valued to connect people, solve problems, and share ideas clearly. We learn to listen carefully, understand context, and choose our words wisely. All of this is good, but the Bible challenges us to go further: to speak with purpose, showing Christ in every action. At work, every conversation, meeting, or message can be an opportunity to demonstrate grace, truth, and encouragement, making our communication a reflection of God’s presence.
A real example comes from Grace International School in Southeast Asia. The school faced a culture of distrust and low engagement until, in 2017, the new superintendent, Steve Anderson, began restoring the environment through active listening, transparency, and humility. Leadership started genuinely hearing staff, acting consistently, and valuing every voice. In a short time, distrust gave way to cooperation, and the workplace became healthy and inspiring. This shows that when communication is guided by Christ-like principles, it not only resolves conflicts but also restores relationships and rebuilds trust.
Challenge
This week, practise intentional listening. Before responding, pause, breathe, and ask yourself: “Do my words reflect Christ’s love and truth?”
Prayer
Lord, help me to listen before I speak, to respond with grace, and to use my words to build up, not harm. May my communication at work reflect Your love and bring peace where there is tension. Let me be a reflection of Your living Word in every conversation. Amen.
