Biblical Wisdom for Resolving Conflict and Living as a Peacemaker
Devotional week 39
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” — Matthew 5:9 (NIV)
We are living in a country where direct conflict is avoided as much as possible. If someone has an issue with another, it is often spoken about with a third person who carries the message. The difficulty is that the problem usually remains unsolved—it’s simply passed on.
This way of dealing with things makes me think of how easy it is to confuse keeping the peace with making peace. Keeping peace may avoid awkward conversations, but it rarely brings healing. Issues left unspoken quietly grow, creating distance and misunderstanding.
Jesus never avoided hard conversations. He spoke the truth, yet always with love, aiming for reconciliation rather than division. Scripture reminds us: “If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you” (Matthew 18:15). God’s way is not gossip or avoidance, but honest, gracious, face-to-face reconciliation.
As Christians, we are called to be peacemakers, not simply peacekeepers. That means choosing courage over silence, and grace over pride. Whether in the workplace, family, or community, this looks like approaching others gently, listening carefully, and seeking restoration above winning an argument.
When we do this, we reflect the heart of Christ—the One who reconciled us to God, not by ignoring sin, but by confronting it with love and sacrifice.
Challenge
Is there someone you’ve been avoiding because a conversation feels uncomfortable?
This week, ask God for courage and take the first step. Speak with them directly in humility, pray before you do, and seek peace that restores rather than silence that divides.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for showing us through Christ what true reconciliation looks like. Forgive me for the times I have avoided conflict instead of seeking peace. Give me wisdom to speak gently, patience to listen well, and humility to forgive. Help me to be a peacemaker who reflects Your heart in every relationship.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
