Doing Ordinary Work Exceptionally Well

Devotional week 46

“Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before obscure men.” — Proverbs 22:29

Many times, we imagine excellence as something that only shows up in big achievements or visible success. Yet most of life happens in the small and ordinary. Proverbs 22:29 reminds us that being skilled in our work, showing care, diligence, and competence, does not go unnoticed. God honors those who develop and steward the abilities He has given them.

In Exodus 35, we meet Bezalel and Oholiab, the artisans God chose to build the tabernacle. They were masters of their craft, yet their true distinction came not only from their technical skill but from the Spirit of God working through them. Every decision, every detail, every stroke of their hands was guided by wisdom, understanding, and insight beyond their natural abilities. Their work was tangible, practical, and ordinary in appearance, but because it was Spirit-led and done with care, it became extraordinary. What might have been seen as routine labor became a sacred act of worship.

This is where the message becomes personal. You, too, have God’s Spirit in you. The skills, knowledge, and abilities you have are gifts from Him, just as they were for Bezalel and Oholiab. When you approach your reports, designs, presentations, or hands-on work with care and intention, you are acting in line with God’s design — showing skill, diligence, and faithfulness in your work. Excellence is not about recognition; it is about serving faithfully with the gifts God has entrusted to you.

God values skilled, diligent work wherever it is done. When we bring creativity, thoughtfulness, and integrity to our daily tasks, we reflect His character and honor Him through our efforts.

Challenge

This week, take one task that feels ordinary and give it your full attention and best effort. Do it as an act of worship, not for recognition, trusting that God sees and honors your skill.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of work. Teach me to value every task, whether seen or unseen. Fill me with Your Spirit so that I may do all things with care, skill, and joy. Let my work reflect Your excellence and draw others to You. Amen.
