Empowered by the Spirit: Finding Strength and Purpose in Unity This Pentecost
Devotional week 24
"All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them." Acts 2:4 (NIV)
Have you ever felt like you're standing alone in your faith at work? Like your values are odd or even offensive in today’s world? I have felt that too. As an employer, I am expected to accommodate different religious needs, special food, prayer breaks, holidays, and I do so respectfully. But sometimes, simply mentioning a Christian belief is seen as pushing my views. That tension is real.
Over the past year, I have often felt a deep sadness and empathy for young professionals entering the workplace and for fellow entrepreneurs trying to stay grounded in an ever-changing world. Navigating today’s cultural landscape is not easy. When confusion threatened to overwhelm me, I found myself returning to the basics—to the Word of Truth.
I asked myself: Why am I here? The answer is simple: To make disciples. To be a witness. This purpose anchored me.
As someone in marketing, I naturally think in terms of audience. I see two:
To the world, I am a witness—through how I live and work each day.
To fellow believers, I am a disciple-maker—offering encouragement, accountability, and truth, guided by the Holy Spirit.
In Acts 2, Jesus’ followers were together—praying, unsure, probably feeling isolated and misunderstood. Yet, when they gathered in unity and prayer, the Holy Spirit came upon them with power, enabling them to witness boldly and live out Christ’s love. Their strength was not in themselves but the Spirit working through their collective faith and community.
This is the invitation of Pentecost: You are not alone. The same Spirit who filled the disciples lives in you. He empowers you to be a witness, and He draws you into the strength of a believing community. Just as the apostles relied on one another, you can find strength and purpose in a community that prays, encourages, and collaborates. This unity invites God’s power to break through isolation. The confidence you build in the community of believers will help you transform your workplace into a place where your life testifies to Jesus, not by pointing out others’ faults, but by embodying His grace and truth.
Your struggles are real, but so is the Spirit’s power to overcome them together. Pentecost reminds us that when God’s people unite, He moves mightily—then and now.
Challenge
This week, connect with at least one fellow believer. Pray together, share honestly, and encourage one another. Let your unity become a channel for the Spirit’s power to work through you at home, at work, or wherever God has placed you.
Prayer
Dear Lord, when I feel alone, remind me that I am part of a greater body. Help me walk in unity, speak with boldness, and reflect Christ in all I do. Empower me to live as a true witness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
