Keep Going: The Joy Ahead
Devotional week 15
"For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart." — Hebrews 12:2-3 (NIV)
The first time I went hiking, it felt like torture. Each step drained my energy, and I longed to return to the comfort of my room, away from the effort. Staying indoors was so much simpler—cozy, familiar, and without strain. Yet, I recognized that stepping outside, being active, and pushing my limits was ultimately beneficial for me.
In a far greater way, Jesus faced a path far more demanding than physical exhaustion. He carried the weight of humanity’s redemption—a mission that meant enduring rejection, betrayal, and relentless opposition. Religious leaders questioned Him, His own people turned against Him, and even His closest friends failed to stand by Him. Yet He pressed on, fully aware of the price He would pay.
Isaiah 53:3 describes it this way: "He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain." Despite the hardship, He endured because He saw beyond the suffering—He saw the joy of restoring us back to God.
In the days leading up to Easter, we often reflect on Christ's sacrifice for our salvation. This is undoubtedly the the whole essence of our faith but what is also important to consider is how Jesus demonstrated perseverance on earth. When challenges come at work, it is tempting to give up or settle for what’s easy. But as we get closer to Easter, we’re reminded of Jesus—the ultimate example of endurance. He faced suffering, rejection, and the weight of the cross, but He didn’t focus on the pain. He focused on the joy ahead.
Jesus didn’t have it easy. He was misunderstood, criticized, and rejected, yet He didn’t quit. That reminds us that challenges don’t mean we’re on the wrong path—they’re often part of the journey. And when we feel worn out, Hebrews 12:3 tells us to "consider Him" so we don’t lose heart. Jesus understands what it’s like to struggle, and He walks with us through it all.
Some days, perseverance looks like pushing through exhaustion. Other days, it just means showing up and trusting God with the results. But no matter what, your work matters—and your faithfulness in it does too.
So, what is the joy set before you? Maybe it is knowing your work is making a difference, the growth it is bringing in you, or the opportunities God is opening up for you to share about your faith. Keeping that bigger picture in mind helps when things get tough.
