Rest Begins With an Invitation — “Come to Me
Devotional week 49
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28
Imagine someone standing at the edge of a river after a long, tiring journey. Their bodies ache, their hands tremble with weariness. Before them flows fresh, clear water, clean and ready to drink. But instead of kneeling to take a deep, refreshing drink, they fumble with shaking hands or try to scoop water into a cracked, broken container. The water is right there, but they are too tired, distracted, or caught up in their routine to actually pause and drink.
This image feels familiar to many of us, especially as we enter December. People are rushing to meet deadlines, wrap up schoolwork, prepare for travel, and think about the new year. Even spiritually, we sometimes enter Advent with good intentions but tired hearts. But Jesus offers us a simple, powerful invitation at the start of this season: “Come to Me.” Not to do more. Not to fix yourself. Just come.
In Luke 10, Martha welcomed Jesus into her home and wanted to serve Him perfectly. Her good intentions, however, turned into worry and stress. She was overwhelmed, tired, and anxious, even in the presence of the One who gives peace. Meanwhile, Mary chose to sit quietly at Jesus’ feet, simply being present with Him.
When Martha voiced her frustration, Jesus responded gently, “You are worried and upset about many things… but only one thing is needed.” Not more tasks. Not more effort. Just presence, closeness to Him.
Jesus invites us today to let go of our many worries and find rest in His presence.
Reflection for the Start of Advent
As December begins, take a moment to ask yourself:
What is draining my strength right now?
Where am I trying to carry things on my own?
What might change if I slowed down enough to truly receive rest from Jesus?
Rest does not start when the to-do list ends. Rest begins when we come to Him.
Prayer
Jesus, I come to You. Please give my heart rest today. Help me to stop rushing and to find peace in Your presence. Amen.
