Simplicity of the Heart: Undivided Devotion
Devotional week 18
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:21 (NIV)
A university student once shared how hard it had become to concentrate during prayer and Bible study. Anytime she wanted to spend time with God, her mind would quickly move to assignments, messages on her phone, plans, and worries about succeeding in life. Even while praying, she was already thinking about the next thing to do.
One evening, tired and mentally stressed, she decided to keep her phone aside for some time and just sit quietly with her Bible. As she reflected, she realized the issue was not really a lack of time. Her heart had become too crowded.
Honestly, many of us can relate to this.
Life can get very busy. There is always something demanding our attention. Work deadlines, family responsibilities, financial pressure, social media, and expectations from people. Before we know it, our hearts become divided and restless.
Jesus says in Matthew 6:21, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Whatever matters most to us will eventually control our attention, decisions, and direction in life.
This is why simplicity is important. It is not just about owning fewer things or living a quiet life. Biblical simplicity starts from the heart. It is learning to remove distractions and putting God back at the center of our lives.
A simple heart is a focused heart. It is a heart that is no longer pulled in too many directions.
Sometimes, the real clutter is not around us. It is inside us. Too many worries. Too many comparisons. Too many things are fighting for space in our hearts.
Simplicity helps us pause and ask:
What truly has my heart? Because whatever has your heart will shape your life.
Challenge
Take a few quiet minutes today to reflect honestly. What has occupied your heart and mind the most recently? Ask God to help you remove distractions and refocus your heart on Him.
Prayer
Lord, my heart is often distracted by many things. Help me to focus on You again. Remove every distraction competing for my attention and teach me to live with a simple and devoted heart. Let my life reflect what truly matters. Amen.
