Too Tired to Pray, Too Busy to Stop
Devotional week 25
"Then he went on alone into the wilderness, traveling all day. He sat down under a solitary broom tree and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors who have already died.”
— 1 Kings 19:4 (NLT)
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."— Matthew 11:28 (NIV)
Recently, I found myself in a season that required more from me than I expected.
I started caring for an elderly woman, the mother of someone who has been a great blessing to me and my family over the years. At the same time, I was still managing my regular work responsibilities. The things that usually helped me stay connected to God—studying the Bible, praying, and exercising—started becoming less consistent. My mind was constantly occupied with how to manage everything. I was too tired to spend time with God and too busy to stop.
Elijah knew that kind of tired. Just one chapter before this, he'd stood alone against 450 prophets of Baal and watched fire fall from heaven. He'd just seen one of the most powerful things God ever did in front of him. And then Jezebel sent a threat, and Elijah ran into the wilderness, sat under a tree, and asked God to let him die. "I have had enough, Lord," he said. "Take my life" (1 Kings 19:4).
What stands out is how God responded. God did not begin with a correction. He met Elijah in his exhaustion. He allowed him to rest. He provided food and water. Then, when Elijah was ready, God spoke to him—not through the powerful wind, earthquake, or fire, but through a gentle whisper.
Sometimes our exhaustion becomes so loud that we struggle to recognize God’s presence. We become focused on solving the situation, carrying the responsibility, or finding a way out that we forget to come to the One who carries us.
As I reflected on my own situation, I realized that my circumstances had not changed. I was still caring for the elderly woman. My responsibilities were still there. But something in my heart began to change when I remembered Jesus’ invitation:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
For many Christian professionals, students, and workers, exhaustion can quietly become part of our normal rhythm. We keep showing up, meeting expectations, and caring for others, but our own souls become neglected.
The invitation remains the same:
Come when you are tired.
Come when your responsibilities feel heavy.
Come when you feel stretched beyond your capacity.
His presence is where our hearts find rest
Challenge
This week, create a small moment of solitude with God. Put aside the noise, quiet your mind, and simply come to Him.
Ask:
“What burden am I carrying that I need to bring to Jesus?”
Prayer
Lord, You know the responsibilities I carry and the moments when I feel tired and overwhelmed. Help me not to become so busy managing life that I forget to sit with You.
Teach me to find rest in Your presence. Renew my heart, strengthen me for each day, and help me trust You with what I cannot control.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
