Before the first step

Devotional, week 1

There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions. I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us from enemies on the road, because we had told the king, “The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him.” So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.” (Ezra 8: 21-23, NIV)

As we see the life of leaders chosen by God, they often fasted and prayed to God before taking any new steps. They remembered His loving kindness and approached Him with a humble heart, seeking answers. As we come together to thank God for the goodness, protection, and provision He showed us in the past year, let us start the next season with fasting and prayer, like the leaders in the Old Testament did before going into battle. We may not be leaders of a great army or nation like they were, but we still have authority and influence over the areas where God has placed us, through the power of His Spirit! As you go back to your workplace or place of study after the New Year celebrations, remember that through you, and through the work you do, the Lord can reach out to your coworkers, clients, fellow students and others you meet in your daily life. Let Him guide you, and He will achieve this.

Let us pray! Lord, open my ears to hear Your voice as You guide me into the new year, and open my mouth to speak of You in the places where You lead me this year!
