Discovering the Purpose of Work in God’s Plan

Devotional week 1

"So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." (1 Corinthians 10:31, NIV)

In many countries, it is customary to make plans for the coming year as the current year draws to a close. These plans often include improving health, buying a house or car, getting out of debt, or finding a new job or additional income. The possibilities are vast and deeply personal. However, we must not forget one question: How does God's plan for our life align with our personal goals? Or, better still, are our plans shaped by the larger perspective of God's purposes?

Work is a significant part of our lives, and people often have different aspirations regarding it. Some seek high positions and attractive salaries, while others focus on stability or work only to meet their immediate needs. Some see work as routine, while others are passionate about what they do or seek to make a social impact through their profession.

Whatever your approach, I invite you to see work as an integral part of God's plan. From the beginning, God gave us as humans the responsibility to "work and take care of" the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:15, NIV). Work is, therefore, not just a means to an end - it is a divine calling. Proverbs 16:3 reminds us: "Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans".

Seeing our work through God's eyes, guided by prayer and meditation on His Word, it becomes more than a job. We discover that our work can reflect God's image and glorify Him. This shift in perspective transforms our work into a purposeful act of worship, allowing us to integrate faith and work and bring the Gospel to life in our daily tasks.

As you consider your work plans for 2025, regard these truths:

  • Work is a God-given vocation to be carried out with diligence, honesty and excellence.

  • It is an act of worship when done for the glory of God.

  • Work allows us to reflect God's character and to grow in virtues such as integrity and love.

  • It provides opportunities to serve others with kindness and justice.

  • Work is an opportunity to participate in God's greater plan by making the gospel tangible in the workplace.

Challenge

This week, take time to pray before you start your workday. Ask God to align your heart with His plan, to help you see purpose in your tasks, and to enable your actions to glorify Him.

Prayer

Lord, I thank You for the privilege of work and the opportunity to serve. Help me see my work as part of Your plan—a way to glorify You and reflect Your character. Give me strength, wisdom, and humility to do my job with excellence and love. May I be a light for Your name, demonstrating integrity and kindness in every action. Amen.
