When God Leads Your Work — Clearly or Quietly

Devotional week 12

While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’” — Acts 13:2 (NIV)

We often long for moments like this. Clear direction. A defined calling. A sense that God has spoken into our work, our decisions, our next step. In Acts 13, that’s exactly what happens. In the middle of worship and fasting, God speaks. The mission becomes visible. The next move is unmistakable.

And if we’re honest, that’s what we want for our own lives — especially in our work. We want to know: Is this the right path? Does this project matter? Am I where I’m supposed to be? But Scripture doesn’t give us a formula for that kind of clarity.

There are other moments.

David, in 2 Samuel 12, fasts, prays, and pleads — yet the outcome doesn’t change.

Job spends chapters wrestling, asking, seeking understanding in Job — and lives through a long silence before God responds.

Same sincerity. Same depth. Different outcomes.

So what does this mean for us — on an ordinary Monday, in meetings, deadlines, decisions?

It means this: God’s mission is not limited to the moments when His voice feels clear.

In Acts, God speaks and sends. In other moments, He is just as present — even when He seems quiet.

Your work is not meaningful only when you have perfect clarity. It is meaningful because it is already part of God’s creation and purpose. Long before direction is revealed, faithfulness is required.

Fasting, praying, seeking God — these don’t give us control over outcomes. They shape us into people who can trust Him in any season.

So whether today feels clear or uncertain, significant or ordinary: You are still invited to participate in what God is doing.

Not just when you hear Him clearly — but also when you choose to trust Him quietly.

Challenge

As you step into your work today, pause for a moment. Surrender your plans, your tasks, your expectations to God. Then ask yourself: Am I waiting for clarity before I engage — or am I willing to be faithful with what is already in front of me?

Choose one task today — even a simple one — and do it with intention, as part of God’s mission.

Prayer

Lord,

In the middle of my work, help me to recognise Your presence. When You speak clearly, give me readiness to follow. When You seem silent, give me strength to remain faithful.

Shape my heart so that I don’t depend on certainty to obey You. Teach me to trust that every task, every moment, can be part of Your greater purpose.

Use my work — even the ordinary parts — for Your glory and Your mission.

Amen.
