Guided on the Journey: Trusting the Lord's Path

One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, “There’s a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish — but what are they for so many?” Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place; so they sat down. The men numbered about five thousand. Then Jesus took the loaves, and after giving thanks he distributed them to those who were seated — so also with the fish, as much as they wanted. John 6:8-11

Life is a journey through a changing landscape on a road with twists and turns. We may sometimes go through a flat valley where we are able to see far ahead. At other times we only see to the next bend. For those who know the Lord and walk with Him, we have the huge blessing of a guide who knows the whole way to the end. He also wants us to go where He is pointing instead of just following others or travelling according to our own whims. The road may go through difficult and hard stretches as well as quiet and lovely meadows or forests, through deserts or busy, crowded cities.

Sometimes we do not sense His presence, but we can still trust He is there. It may be hard if we go through a challenging time. There is so much trouble in the world that may discourage us, but we may also be overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the task that God has given us - to plant the Good News about Jesus Christ in all corners of the world. Is this possible to accomplish in reality? And is my contribution worth the effort?

In the Apostle John’s account of Jesus feeding five thousand, he quotes Andrew saying: “There's a little boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But that's a drop in the bucket for a crowd like this.” (John 6:8) Perhaps his mum had wisely sent him off with a lunch pack and asked him to share with his friends. And share he did. “Then Jesus took the bread and having given thanks, gave it to those who were seated. He did the same with the fish. All ate as much as they wanted.” (v. 11). The apostles even gathered twelve baskets with leftovers when they cleaned up after the meal and were therefore hugely blessed themselves. Even in times of need and scarcity of resources, we can give what we have to the Lord. And he will use it.

Prayer

"As I journey through life, help me to place my faith in you, Lord - especially during challenging times. I offer what I have, trusting that you blessings will multiply my efforts. May your light shine through me as I share the Good News with the world. Amen."
