Reflect Christ's Love at Work
People around us evaluate us by our behaviour. What we say and how we react to things in our daily lives, form their impression of us - and of our faith. This applies also in our workplace. How do you react to pressure, challenges, and frustrations? How are your conversations with your colleagues. How do you respond when something is not working out as you want it to? As Christians, we are called to be light and salt, not only in our churches, but also as professional colleagues.
Here are a few things to think of:
Exemplary behaviour
Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 2:5, CSB)
Imagine how the world of work would be transformed if we all behaved like Jesus! Jesus was full of grace and truth, and he showed us humility, love, and servanthood. If we want to influence our professional colleagues, we should try to follow his model. This means not only acting ethically at work. We should also be that colleague who offers help when someone is overwhelmed, who listens attentively when others need to vent, and who always seeks solutions that benefit everyone. In any situation remember to ask yourself: "What would Jesus do?".
Empathy and compassion
Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. (Colossians 3:12, CSB)
People often face pressure and challenges in their workplaces. As Christians, we can make a difference by showing empathy and compassion. Just as Jesus shared his love with everyone, we can show empathy and understanding to our colleagues at work. If anyone is going through difficulties, reach out and offer support. Be that colleague who brightens someone's day with an encouraging word or a gesture of kindness. Empathy and compassion at work not only transform the environment, but also touch people's hearts deeply.
Share knowledge and experience
Instruct the wise, and he will be wiser still; teach the righteous, and he will learn more. (Proverbs 9:9, CSB)
In our workplaces we all have something to learn and something to teach. Sharing knowledge and experience is a powerful way of having a positive influence. If you have knowledge or skills that can benefit your coworkers, share it without hesitation. Be a mentor to those just starting out and be willing to learn from others. When we share our gifts and knowledge, we not only help our colleagues to grow, but we also create a more collaborative and enriching work environment.
Influencing the workplace with the love of Christ is not always easy. It can however give us an incredible experience that goes beyond work and positions. We do not need to be famous leaders to make a difference. All we need to do is to allow Jesus to be our example and to follow him.
The next time you face a challenging situation at work, remember to ask yourself: "What would Jesus do?" Let us be that professional colleague, that friend, that mentor and that example that shines with the love and compassion of Jesus. Together, we can transform our work environment, one step of faith at a time.
